ALBAWABA - Despite being jailed, former minister and activist Ghazi Chaouachi announced that he will be running for president in the upcoming elections that are set to take place on October 6.
A Facebook post revealed that the former Democratic Current party leader Ghazi Chaouachi, who is jailed for "conspiracy to disturb national security", has officially placed his bid to run for president in the upcoming elections.
The decision to run is due to "tense conditions, serious economic stagnation and the unprecedented deterioration of social conditions and fraught diplomatic relations. Besides the transformation of "Tunisian everyday life into daily suffering in difficult and degraded situations", the post reads.
The announcement comes after the Destour Party announced that its jailed president Abir Moussi announced her candidacy.
Earlier in July, Tunisian authorities announced the detention of the Secretary-General of the Union Populaire Républicaine party (UPR), Lutfi Mraihi. Mraihi also submitted his bid for the upcoming elections
