ALBAWABA - Brazilian Supreme Court unsealed an investigative report accusing former president Jair Bolsonaro of embezzling about $1.2 million worth of jewelry during his time in office.
The report comes after Bolsonaro was indicted in embezzlement, asset laundering, and criminal association last week in connection to the jewelry from Saudi Arabia.
The unsealed report alleged "a criminal association for the embezzlement of high-value gifts that were received due to the position of former President Jair Bolsonaro".
Bolsonaro denied committing any of the alleged accusations in regard to the jewelry embezzlement and had yet to comment on the indictment.
The allegedly embezzled jewelry includes diamond-encrusted Rolex and Patek Phillipe watches, a necklace, rings, and cufflinks, among other things. According to the newspaper, some of the items were handed to government personnel acting on Bolsonaro's behalf during his overseas trips.
Paulo Gonet, Brazil's prosecutor-general, will evaluate the police report and decide whether to press charges and put the far-right leader on trial.
The jewelry would have been tax-free if delivered as a gift by Saudi Arabia to Brazil, but it was not Bolsonaro's to keep. Instead, it would have been placed in the presidential collection.
The police inquiry revealed that Bolsonaro's family received "revenue obtained through the illegal sale" of the gems. According to the publication, the investigation revealed that the former president integrated the money without utilizing Brazil's financial system to disguise its origin.
