Qatar’s finance ministry will conduct a detailed assessment of the present environmental situation in the Gulf state with the assistance of Japanese experts, reported the Gulf Times newspaper on Thursday.

It said that two Japanese experts will cooperate the ministry in studying the various problems faced by environmental departments.

"This project is in accordance with the top priority the government of Qatar has accorded to environmental issues and the Japanese government's desire to build multi-layered relations in various fields with GCC countries," a Japanese embassy spokesman said.

Environmental cooperation was intensively discussed during Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono's visit to Qatar last January, said the paper.

On that occasion, the Kono initiative was announced for strengthening ties in the field, he said.

The Japanese experts' visit is also part of a series of environmental activities held under the framework of technical cooperation between Japan and Qatar – Albawaba.com
