Japanese Foreign Minister Departs for US

Japanese Foreign Minister Yohei Kono left Thursday for the United States to meet US Secretary of State Colin Powell, a ministry official said.

"Our minister left Tokyo for Washington on schedule," the official said.

Kono is scheduled to meet Powell in Washington in the morning and over lunch on Friday to discuss bilateral and global issues, the official said.

It is Japan's first high-level delegation to Washington since President George W. Bush launched his administration on Saturday.

Kono's departure came hours after he took the unprecedented step of returning six month's worth of his ministerial salary over an alleged embezzlement involving a senior diplomat -- TOKYO (AFP)
