Japan's environment minister said Thursday agreement over the Kyoto Protocol on global warming must be reached by the autumn if the treaty is to come into effect in 2002 as scheduled.

Yoriko Kawaguchi said final agreement on rules of the treaty must be reached before or at UN climate talks in October in Morocco for it to come into force as scheduled, said an official from the environment ministry.

"If the treaty were to come into effect in 2002, an agreement has to be reached at Marrakech," Kawaguchi said, according to the official – TOKYO (AFP)
