A project to develop and expand Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) will begin one year from now, reported Saudi Press Agency (SPA), quoting an official as saying.
"Execution of the project will take about four years," said Abdul-Hameed al-Uyouni, director general of engineering affairs in the Civil Aviation Presidency.
He told the agency that directives have been issued to conduct a study aiming at development of the airport in order to meet all requirements and accommodate the expected increase in the number of passengers during the next 20 years.
The plan includes establishing new plane loading areas.
SPA said that the project is expected to raise the airport's efficiency and increase its capacity so that it meets the expected increase in the number of Umrah performers and foreign visitors throughout the year as well as opening the door for tourism to the kingdom.
Meanwhile, the agency reported that the kingdom is working on expanding Madinah Airport to receive 40 international and 20 domestic flights daily during Haj and Umrah seasons.
According to the design, the airport will have two floors: one for outgoing passengers and the other for incoming passengers, said SPA - Albawaba.com
