A Jewish settler was shot dead by Palestinian fighters near Tulkarem in the West Bank, reported Radio Israel.
He received two bullets in the head while he was driving near the city, said the report.
AFP reported, however, that the dead was an Israeli soldier shot dead by a Palestinian sniper.
Palestinian security officials said Israeli tanks opened fire on their positions in Tulkarem following the shooting.
The checkpoint was manned by members of Force 17, the elite guard of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, the officials told AFP.
