Jordan is free of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease, an official at the agriculture ministry was quoted as saying Sunday by the Jordan Times newspaper.

The outbreak of the disease in the United Kingdom, coming on the heels of the latest mad cow scare, has again badly damaged the British livestock sector with great financial loss.

"We are in a constant contact with all veterinary centers and not a single case was reported up to date," said the official.

All centers, he added, are linked with the ministry by Internet allowing for immediate notification.

The Jordanian government already has imposed a ban in place on the import of live cattle, beef and beef products from almost all of Europe because of mad cow disease, again detected in Britain and other European countries late last year, said the paper.

Several cases were found in Turkey and Iran, but both countries said that authorities managed to control the spread of the disease – Albawaba.com
