Jordan's Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib on Wednesday received a phone call from his Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni, expressing her regret over the statements made by Israeli Commander Gen. Yair Nave. According to Petra, Livni said "The statements don't represent in any way the Israeli formal policy," expressing her apology for such statements.
According to Haaretz, Naveh said that at least 80 percent of Jordan's nationals are Palestinian and that, due to regional threats, King Abdullah II is liable to be the last Hashemite monarch to lead the kingdom.
Before Livni's apology, acting Jordanian Ambassador to Tel Aviv, Omar Al-Nazif slammed Naveh's "irresponsible declarations." Al-Nazif conveyed to Petra he expects the Israeli government to take disciplinary action against the officer. The ambassador added that a lack of action on the part of the Israeli government is to negatively impact on Israeli-Jordanian ties.
