Jordan and Italy have signed an $84 million soft loan agreement to finance a contract for replacing the old water networks in two housing projects in Amman, reported the Jordan Times on Saturday.
Water Minister Hazem Nasser, who signed the agreement for Jordan, said the project was part of a national program to replace the kingdom's antiquated water infrastructure.
He noted that the project was the 14th in a series of 15 projects to curb water leakage in the networks, which he estimated to reach 48 percent of the water pumped to different parts of the country.
The contract, which will be implemented by an Italian company, includes erecting two water reservoirs in Dahiat Rashid and Kharabsheh, one with a capacity of 14,500 cubic meters and the second with a capacity ranging between 7,000 and 7,500 cubic meters.
It also covers setting up chlorination units, and installing a 1.4 kilometer conveyer pipeline to link the two reservoirs, in addition to establishing a pumping station in the Kharabsheh area with a capacity of 2,500 cubic meters.
Nasser said the ministry would soon float the 15th tender, which covers the replacement of the old water network in western Amman – Albawaba.com
