The Jordanian National Football team continues to reap the rewards of its August victory in the 9th Arab Football Championship as it climbed five spots to 19th in the ranking of the 43 Asian countries, according to Al Rai Daily. This development has important implications for the 2002 World Cup qualifying rounds as it pushed the team from category C to category B, increasing its chance of facing weaker opponents. Exactly who Jordan will meet will be determined tomorrow following the FIFA draw to be held in the Japanese capital. The championship victory also helped improve its FIFA standing to 115.
The almost 200 teams competing for a World Cup spot are divided according to regions. During the qualifying rounds, the teams of each region play against each other with the best countries winning spots in the World Cup, to be held in Japan and South Korea.
Jordan will face other Asian teams, possibly including the number-1-ranked Saudi Arabia or number 2, South Korea.
