Jordan’s cabinet has approved the setting up of a branch of the Arab Open University (AOU) in Amman in collaboration with Arab Gulf Program for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND), reported Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Tuesday.
The agency quoted minister of education, Khaled Touqan as saying that the ministerial council has allocated a plot of land to set up the branch, explaining that the agreement was made during the visit of prince Talal bin Abdelaziz, chairman of AGFUND to Jordan, which concluded on Monday.
He indicated that Prince Talal would finance the first stage of the costs of setting up the branch, which will be opened next year.
AGFUND is a regional developmental institution, established in 1981 upon the initiative of Prince Talal, and with the support of the leaders of the Arab Gulf states that constitute its membership and contribute to its budget.
AGFUND is concerned with the support of sustainable human development efforts, targeting the neediest groups in the developing countries, particularly women and children, in cooperation with the organizations and institutions active in this field, according to the organization’s website.
The Saudi prince was also behind the idea of AOU, which is headquartered in Kuwait – Albawaba.com
