Jordan's security court on Monday started the proceedings for a trial involving a Jordanian citizen who is suspected of having attempted to sneak into Israel to blow himself up, AFP reported.

Anas Awamra, 21, has been detained since August, and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Awamra was charged with performing actions that harm the kingdom's relations with a foreign state and attempting to enter Israel illegally.

According to his indictment, Awamra left his hometown of al-Shouna al-Shamaliya on his way to the al-Baqoura area near the northern Jordanian border with Israel and was planning to enter illegally to commit a suicide attack.

He was caught by the Jordanian border patrol as he was trying to cross the border into Israel, the indictment read.

Awamra faces three to 15 years in prison if he is convicted.

The court was adjourned until next Wednesday.
