A Jordanian doctor warned recently that women who do not exercise and depend completely on household help to perform daily chores are at risk of developing osteoporosis.
"The percentage of broken wrists among maids is much less than that of housewives in the Mediterranean region, where the trend, especially in big cities, is for women to have maids," Swedish-educated Tareq Khalifeh told Jordan Times.
Khalifeh, who is on the Swedish Board of Radiology and Neuroradiology, said while maids tend to have stronger bones due to hard work, inactive women are more at risk of developing osteoporosis because - and combined with other factors - they do not carry out simple chores that add strength to their bones.
According to experts, Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. Men as well as women suffer from osteoporosis, a disease that can be prevented and treated.
In the US alone, 10 million individuals already have osteoporosis and 18 million more have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for this disease, according to statistics – Albawaba.com
