Jordan's money changers decided over the weekend to stop trading in the shekel to protest Israeli repression in the Palestinian territories, a spokesman for their association said Monday.
"The decision to stop trading in the shekel was taken over the weekend in solidarity with the Palestinian people to protest Israeli repression," the spokesman told AFP.
The president of the association of money changers Moti'h Kabariti, in press reports published Monday, said the decision affects 67 money changers in Jordan.
Around 12 million shekels (three million dollars) are traded each month in Jordan, mainly by visiting Arab Israelis or foreign tourists who arrive in the kingdom from the Jewish state, Kabariti said.
He said this was a fraction of the total of one billion dollars in foreign currency traded each year in Jordan.
Anti-Israeli sentiment has been very high in Jordan, the only Arab country apart from Egypt to have a peace treaty with Israel, since the start of violence in the Palestinian territories in September -- AMMAN (AFP)
