Jordan is denying rumors that Israelis own or are buying land in the kingdom, saying that Jordanian law does not permit foreigners to own land or real estate, except to house the personnel who manage their investment projects.

The director of Jordan's department of land and surveys, Abdul Munem Samarah, was quoted in the local press on Sunday as saying that “rumors about individual [Israelis] buying and owning land or any form of real estate are totally groundless.”

He said Jordanian land ownership laws were considered among the most stringent in the world.

The department on Sunday issued its annual report about the area of land bought by non-Jordanians last year, noting that the total area purchased was 4,191 dunums.

According to the report, non-Jordanian Arabs, especially from Kuwait and the Arab Gulf countries, acquired the lion's share.

Kuwaitis were the largest purchasers, buying 1,943 dunums, followed by Saudis, 1,670 dunums; Syrians, 258 dunums; Iraqis, 120 dunums; Palestinians, 65 dunums and citizens of the United Arab Emirates, 55 dunums.

The report said land bought by non-Arab nationals ranged between one dunum and five dunums – Albawaba.com
