A number of Jordanian Politicians expressed their resentment of the resolutions of the Arab Emergency Summit, which was concluded in Cairo on Sunday. They said in interviews with Albawaba.com that these resolutions fell short of the Arab’s expectations and aspirations.
Abdul-Latif Arabiyat
Secretary general of the Islamic Action Front, Abdul-Latif Arabiyat, said “the summit resolutions fell short of the required level of expectation and the people’s aspirations, particularly after the big sacrifices of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories where a number of martyrs were killed and many wounded.”
“The summit revealed the false peace process and exposed it. The Zionist enemy is still killing, committing atrocities, and desecrating the religious holy shrines,” Arabiyat added.
Arabiyat explained the impact of the summit on the Palestinian uprising saying that “this summit did not solve the problems, the Israeli side is still killing, committing atrocities, desecrating the holy places, and implementing policies of repression against the Palestinian people. The Palestinian side will respond to those acts. Nobody should expect anything other than a response. All options are open, particularly with the summit resolutions being disappointing and far below the required level of expectations.”
Regarding the reaction of the Jordanian people towards the outcome of the summit, Arabiyat said: “Everyone aspires to have resolutions that would be in congruence with the horrible circumstances in the occupied territories. This summit did not solve the crisis which instigated it. The Jews are continuing to kill and desecrate the holy places. All that we have heard from the summit is to keep things as they are under the full control of the Jews.”
Faleh Al-Taweel:
Former Jordanian Ambassador to Moscow, Faleh Al-Taweel, said: “I think the resolutions are very rational because they were based on clear summit objectives and are an attempt to find solutions to the problem put on the table. Ehud Barak blew the negotiations with the Palestinians to reach an agreement and exchange of land for peace. This is due to the fact that peace as such contradicts with the Israeli ideology and may result in Barak losing his political position. So he agreed with Sharon on the latter’s visit to the Aqsa Mosque and then started killing large number of Palestinians in order to bring the peace to a halt.”
Sticking to the peace process, the summit deepened Barak’s crisis and his relation with Knesset and Israeli opposition who plan to undermine the peace process. The summit called for international protection of the Palestinian people and this means that Barak has violated international law. The summit called for the formation of an international court to try war criminals and the formation of an international investigating committee which would submit its reports to the UN Secretary General. All this has put Israel on one side, against the whole world on the other side, and made Barak appear as if he were fighting the whole world,” Al-Taweel added.
Al-Taweel stressed that “the uprising would continue because the summit did not call for its end. All Arab countries instigated the whole world to be against Israel when they called for international protection of the Palestinians and put the responsibility on them.”
Orayb Al-Rantawi
Commenting on the outcome of the Arab Summit, the journalist and political analyst, Orayb Al-Rantawi said: “I think this summit did not result in anything new especially after it ruled out means of putting pressure on Israel by the Palestinian people. The resolutions fell short of aspirations of the Palestinians and Arabs who took to the streets protesting the crimes committed against the Palestinian people.”
The final statement issued by the summit was full of condemning words against the Israelis without mentioning practical actions. The resolutions did not mention anything regarding the options of using force, nor war options such as oil. It also did not refer to the USA and its duplicity of standards when dealing with the Arab world .”
Deputee Khalil Attieyah:
Member of Jordanian Parliament Khalil Attieyah said: “The summit resolutions disappointed both the Palestinian and Arab people. They have not been up to the level of the angry Arab people throughout the world, who took to the streets in sympathy with the Palestinian people and who are currently resisting the most vicious war machine ever known. The Palestinians are tolerating all kinds of siege, starvation, killing of kids, old people and women by the Israeli occupation forces.”
“We should review the agreements signed with Israel and I call for the cancellation of these treaties.”
Deputee Nashat Hamarne:
Member of Jordanian Parliament, Nashat Hamarneh told Albawaba that “The Arab people did not expect the summit to come out with crucial resolutions regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is clear that there is a big gap between the attitude of the Arab people, who are ready for confrontation, and the formal position of the Arab governments.
Attention should be drawn to the position of some Arab countries such as Iraq despite blockade and the positions of Yemen and Sudan.”
Hamarneh stressed that the summit resolutions are nothing but a response to the Sharm Al-Sheick summit statement. This fact indicates that the Americans are dictating the Arab summits.
Toujan Faisal:
Former member of Jordanian Parliament Toujan Faisal said: “We were not surprised with the summit resolutions. These resolutions were extremely bad as expected.
They betrayed all Arab people and Martyrs’ blood in the Palestinian occupied territories. These resolutions depict the sides which the Arab leaders are loyal to. These sides are not the Arab nation. The Arab leaders should have at least been ashamed of what Qaddafi said. They should have been ashamed of the Arab people’s outrage and the bloodshed on Palestinian land. They should have issued resolutions calling for the freezing of relations with Israel and the withdrawal of ambassadors but they did not even achieve these minimum (objectives). They cannot work independently of the Zionist decisions.”
Faisal noted that “the Egyptian formal position which called for holding the summit is nothing but conspiracy. The leading role of Egypt in the region vanished with the death of Nasser. The coalition between Egypt and Syria will end as I think the Syrians will strengthen their ties with Iraq in the next few days to form a stronger Arab pact.”
Ibrahim Ajweh:
The Fateh Intifadah official in Jordan, Ibrahim Ajweh said: “The final statement of the summit was far below the expectations of the people protesting in the Palestinian occupied territories. They did not satisfy the Arab public which took to the street in protest of the Israeli crimes and in sympathy with the Intifadah and called for opening the borders, stopping normalization with Israel, and canceling all agreements with the Zionist enemy.”
Ajwa stressed that people took to the streets in Palestine and throughout the Arab world as a result of the incompetence of the Arab governments. The Arab public took the initiative in rejecting the agreements signed with the Zionist enemy. People should be warned not to surrender to despair because of the Arab summit resolutions.
