Jordan's King Abdullah II has telephoned Syria's new President Bashar Assad to congratulate him on his election victory and pledged to develop ties with the neighboring country.
The official Petra news agency said the monarch made the call late Tuesday, hours after Bashar was confirmed as Syria's 16th president after winning 97.29 percent of the vote in a national referendum.
The King said this victory reflected the Syrian's people "confidence, respect and appreciation" for their new leader - AMMAN (AFP)
