Jordan's King Abdullah II headed for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Tuesday in a new bid to further peacemaking and overcome the obstacles standing in the way of an accord.
The visit comes after the United States declared it will not hold a second peace summit until both sides are ready to make the "tough decisions" necessary to forge a deal to end half a century of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
King Abdullah will first meet Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in the West Bank town of Ramallah before holding talks in Tel Aviv with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak three hours later.
It is his second visit to Israel and his third to the Palestinian territories since he ascended the throne in February 1999.
A Jordanian official said Sunday that the talks would focus on efforts to overcome obstacles to the peace process, which has stumbled along since the collapse of the Camp David summit almost a month ago over the fate of Jerusalem - AMMAN (AFP)
