Prince Hassan of Jordan will attend the reopening ceremony of the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue in Auschwitz, Poland next Tuesday, Haaretz reported on Wednesday.

The building, the last extant synagogue in Auschwitz, will house the Auschwitz Jewish Center, the Israeli daily said, adding that the ceremony will be attended by 400 guests, including world leaders.

The restored synagogue will house an educational and cultural center devoted to chronicling the centuries of Jewish life in Auschwitz and to memorializing the Jewish victims of the nearby concentration and death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, through the study of Jewish life and culture, the daily added.

Former Knesset speaker Shevah Weiss, who will head the delegation from Israel, said, "I find it most meaningful that Prince Hassan has chosen to reinforce the Israeli-Jordanian relationship through our most sensitive point," Weiss, a Holocaust survivor, was quoted by the paper as saying.

The former crown prince of Jordan has been active in inter-faith dialogue among other cultural activities at the local, regional and international levels - Albawaba.com
