Ulsterman Damaen Kelly survived a fourth-round knockdown to retain his European flyweight title with a unanimous points victory over Jose Antonio Lopez Bueno at the Ulster Hall in Belfast.
Slick-mover Kelly found himself on the canvas from a flashing right arm but immediately regained his composure and completely dominated the remainder of Monday night's contest.
Former WBO champion Bueno had been expected to give Kelly a stern test but the little dynamo from Belfast always had an answer to the spirited assault of the Spaniard.
Kelly frustrated Bueno in the ring and there was only going to be one winner at the end though the judges' scoring of 116-111 117-111 and 116-113 seemed rather charitable to the challenger.
Afterwards Kelly said: "I can now go home and enjoy playing with my new daughter. I am very pleased with my performance - I got caught with a good right hand but it didn't bother me and I got right back to my boxing.
"It was a good hard fight but I knew I was always in control, even after the knockdown which didn't really affect me" - (AFP)
