Iran's President Mohammad Khatami on Sunday stressed what he deemed to be the Iraqi people's right to govern themselves and decide their own fate as a nation. During a meeting with the current president of the Iraq Governing Council, Mohammad Bahr al-Uloum, Khatami said a weakening of the Iraqi nation would mean a weakening of the Shiite, Sunni, Kurd communities living in Iraq.
According to IRNA, he voiced his belief that the continued occupation of Iraq would give rise to greater insecurity in the country.
