Mohammad Khatami will pay the first visit to Cuba by an Iranian president, Tehran's ambassador in the Cuban capital, Davood Salehi, said Tuesday.

Khatami will arrive in Havana Friday for a 48-hour official visit, following his participation in the OPEC summit in Caracas, the diplomat told a news conference.

The Iranian president will be welcomed "with full honors by Cuban President Fidel Castro," the diplomat added.

Tehran and Havana have a number of bilateral accords, in fields including biotechnology, scientific exchange programs and fishing.

Cuba depends on oil imports to fuel most of its power plants.

Salehi added that Cuba's Vice President Carlos Lage -- architect of the country's limited economic reforms -- would travel to the Iranian capital October 5 -- HAVANA (AFP)
