Kuwait's liberal information minister, Saad bin Teflah al-Ajmi, who has been the target of repeated criticism by Islamist MPs for his media policy, resigned on Wednesday, his office said.
"Yes, the minister has submitted his resignation to the emir" Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, a spokesman for the minister told AFP.
He gave no reason for the resignation.
Ajmi was appointed to the cabinet in July 1999 following parliamentary elections that saw Islamist and liberal opposition groups gain strength in the 50-seat house.
During his 15-month tenure, the minister was repeatedly criticised, mainly by Islamist MPs, for failing to adopt a conservative media policy in the state-run TV and radio stations.
Ajmi's resignation came amid rising speculation of an imminent cabinet reshuffle.
Kuwait's crown prince and prime minister, Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, is currently in Britain for medical checkups. Influential Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah is the acting premier – KUWAIT CITY (AFP)
