The chairman of Kuwait’s committee for MIA and POW affairs, Sheikh Salem Sabah Al Sabah, will meet Egyptian officials on Thursday to discuss the fate of about 600 Kuwaitis the emirate says have been detained in Iraq since the Gulf War.
Salem, who arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for a visit expected to last for a few days, is scheduled to meet with Egyptian and Arab League officials for talks on the issue, reported the official Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA).
He will meet with the secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, and is also expected to hold a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher to brief him on the latest developments in the decade-old issue.
Iraq earlier sent a message to the Arab League Council, saying it was ready to cooperate with a proposed ad hoc panel, but Kuwait rejected the call, and insisted that Iraq end a boycott of the tripartite technical committee meetings set by the UN.
Speaking to KUNA in a telephone interview, Salem described as "decisive and firm" a report by UN chief Kofi Annan, which will be submitted to the 56th session of the UN General Assembly next week.
The report calls on Iraq to reconsider its non-cooperation with the UN committee charged with POW issue, said the official – Albawaba.com
