At least 10 people were killed and several others are missing after torrential rains caused flash floods in the mountainous region of Salafiyeh in western Yemen during the weekend, local authorities said Sunday.

"The bodies of 10 victims, most of them women, have been recovered and rescue operations are continuing in search of the missing," a local official told AFP.

Dozens of homes and thousands of acres of land were damaged by the flooding in the region, some 180 kilometers west of the capital Sanaa, he added.

The Yemeni government has sent relief teams to the area to help look for the missing and assist the homeless, a government source added in Sanaa. Most of the flooding took place on Saturday, he said.
