Heavy artillery attacks last night were reported in the northern districts of the Yemeni city of Taez as another truce collapsed. According to press reports, the  ceasefire between the Yemeni army and the forces of tribal leader Sheikh Sadeq Ahmar lasted only an hour. Clashes were renewed also in the Yemeni capital.

On Tuesday, Yemeni security forces and gunmen loyal to President Ali Saleh opened fire on demonstrators in the center of Sanaa after a massive march. At least 15 killed on Tuesday, according to press reports.

Saleh met Tuesday with US Ambassador Gerald Feierstein after the UN Security Council and the United States both urged him to start the transfer of power immediately, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

She welcomed the talks but said Saleh must live up to his promises.
