At least 20 Kenyan police officers have been killed in an attack by suspected al-Shabaab gunmen in eastern Garissa, Kenyan media reported Tuesday.
The Standard and Daily newspapers said the officers were killed north of Garissa in the village of Yumbis on Monday evening, after they tried to help colleagues whose vehicle hit a landmine earlier that day. Four of the officers' vehicles were burnt.
Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi confirmed the attack but didn't provide further details, Reuters reported.
Shabaab has been responsible for several recent attacks in Kenya, including the university massacre last month that targeted non-Muslims and killed at least 148 people.
