Medical sources in Yemen said security forces opened fire on protesters in the capital Sanaa after they rallied towards the presidential palace calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign. At least 26 people were killed and 500 wounded.
The ministry of defense conveyed the trouble started when petrol bombs were thrown at security forces.
Reports said clashes continued in Zubairy Street in the capital between forces loyal to President Saleh and soldiers from the First Armored Division, led by General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, who declared his support for the opposition.
