Clashes Wednesday in Cairo between supporters and opponents of the ruling military junta left five people dead and 50 wounded. This came after gunmen attacked a rally against the ruling military junta near the Defense Ministry in Cairo, said medical sources and security services officials.
The attack occurred at dawn and provoked violent clashes between the unidentified attackers and protesters gathered for several days to demand the departure of military power. Both sides were using Molotov cocktails and stones.
Officials from the Ministry of Health failed to confirm this death toll as the bodies were not transported to the hospital. However, they said "several dozen were injured, some seriously." According to state television, clashes continued into midmorning. Among the protesters are supporters of Salafist leader Hazem Abu Ismail, who camped in the area since Saturday, after their leader's exclusion by the electoral commission from the presidential race scheduled for May 23 and 24 .
