A Lebanese farmer was seriously wounded on Sunday when he stepped on a landmine while watering his field, Lebanese security sources said.

Saeed Ismail, 70, suffered leg wounds in the incident on the outskirts of Rmeish village in the Bint Jbeil region, the sources said, quoted by the Gulf News Agency (GNA).

He was taken to the hospital in the port city of Tyre and was listed in critical condition.

One of Ismail's legs was amputated, hospital sources said.

The United Nations estimates that Israel left at least 130,000 mines and unexploded shells in the 850-square-kilometer zone that it evacuated in May 2000.

Since Israel's pullout, at least 16 civilians have been killed and more than 90 injured from mines and unexploded shells left in south Lebanon, according to Lebanese sources – Albawaba.com
