Lebanese MP Ghassan Matar, of the Pan-Syrian Socialist Party, has said in an interview with Albawaba.com that he believes the threats by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak directed to Lebanon and Syria “are just meant to help raise Barak’s morale” who is losing ground for his political rivals.
“Barak,” he said “looks for a way out through directing the conflict outside Palestine whenever the noose is tightening around his neck.”
Matar said that the Syrians and the Lebanese are standing in one line in the face of these threats, which “ will not take the Israeli Prime Minister to the targeted end.”
He stressed that the Lebanese resistance is present and is supported by the government and the people of Lebanon, a fact that makes such threats of no weight “because any harm that could be caused to Lebanon [by Israel] would be retaliated.”
In a response to a question why his party has halted military action although it was active during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, MP Matar said that resistance is not confined to military operations against aggression.
He said resistance can also be of influence when it is concerned with taking firm political stands against compromises to the enemy.
Matar stressed that the Palestinian Intifada is not alone, for all Arabs are standing by the Palestinians and their pursuit of their independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
He added that the Intifada was the focal point at the October 21-22 Arab Summit, a fact which means that the Arab leaders could not afford to exceed the limits set by the “Revolutionaries of the Intifada.”
