The Lebanese government earmarked $2.5 billion on Friday to develop the nation’s infrastructure, as part of a three-year plan beginning in 2002, reported the Daily Star newspaper.

The sum was agreed at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Participants included Finance Minister Fouad Siniora, Economy Minister Basil Fuleihan and a delegation from the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR).

CDR was entrusted with overseeing the projects, which aim to improve potable water supplies, sewage and solid waste disposal networks, electricity supplies, telecommunications, roads, education, health, environment, agriculture, irrigation and transport.

Part of the meeting was devoted to setting up the mechanism for the implementation of the plan by contracting out projects where financing has already been made available from foreign sources, said the paper.

Hariri encouraged participants to intensify meetings with Siniora to set the CDR’s budget over the next three years, it added – Albawaba.com
