ALBAWABA - Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced on Thursday that the parliament has set a date to vote and elect a new president.
This decision came two days following the agreement on a ceasefire deal between the Lebanese Hezbollah group and Israel to stop attacks after over 14 months of fighting.
According to Berri, the session during which the Lebanese parliament will vote on a new president will be held on Jan. 9, 2025.
The Lebanese government has been facing a deadlock in electing a new president to replace Michel Aoun who left office on October 30, 2022. It is worth noting that Aoun, 91, had been the president of Lebanon from October 2016 till October 2022.
Since the departure of Michel Aoun, the Lebanese army held several sessions to replace him, however, the government failed to agree on a candidate.
Lebanon has been facing not only political issues but also a huge economic crisis as the country's economy crashed following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and then the Beirut port blast which caused massive material losses in addition to the killing of 218 people.
The Beirut port blast took place on August 4, 2020, and killed hundreds of people in addition to the injury of over 7,000 as well as $15 billion in property damage.
