Lebanese minister: Lebanese involvement in Syria causing Lebanon violence

Security concerns in Lebanon will persist as long as Lebanese are involved in the Syrian crisis, Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk said Tuesday, in light of two suicide car bombings in the country in less than a week.

“The situation cannot settle as long as Lebanese indulge in the Syrian fire, whether alongside the regime or against it,” Machnouk told reporters after holding talks with Speaker Nabih Berri.

“The security situation is under control, and the fact that the suicide bombers were nervous is proof of that," he said, affirming that the country’s security agencies remain ready and on alert.

Two suicide attacks in less than a week have shaken Lebanon after it witnessed a relative calm following the formation of a national unity government and the implementation of a Army-led security plan.

The plan, drafted by the Higher Defense Council, curbed the series of car bombings that struck Lebanon last year and in early 2014.

Machnouk said he spoke with Berri about the importance of continuing the implementation of the crackdown.

The minister also said he agreed with the speaker about the need to refrain from disrupting constitutional institutions “because that is not the way to elect a president.
