Lebanonese Police Arrest 17 Women for Prostitution

A Lebanonese police spokesman said 17 women were recently on prostitution charges, reported the Daily Star newspaper.  

The women, who are of Palestinian, Nigerian, Ethiopian and Syrian nationalities, were apprehended in the Dora, Maameltein and Beirut governorates.  

A patrol from the anti-gambling office also arrested five people for running illegal gambling dens in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, said the paper.  

Separately, the interior ministry issued a statement announcing that security forces had apprehended 344 people in the past 24 hours.  

According to the statement, more than half the charges were against foreigners who had entered the country illegally, or whose residence permit had expired, the paper said, adding that the remaining charges included robbery, gambling, driving without a license, desertion from the armed forces and driving under the influence of alcohol.  

The statement added that 745 tickets were issued to motorists who failed to use seatbelts, as well as 65 tickets for drivers caught exceeding the speed limit – Albawaba.com
