Libya’s Prime Minister Abdullah Al Thani has asked for more assistance from the international community in combating extremism in the country, AFP has reported.

Ahead of Geneva peace talks this week, Al Thani told the AFP news agency that a lifting of a current arms embargo against the government was needed to fight the militants.

The UN Security Council enforced the arms embargo when Libya  became engulfed in fighting since when its leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was overthrown and killed at the start of an uprising in 2011.

The current government is now based in the east of the country as militants took control of the capital Tripoli in August.

The United Nations announced on Saturday that a new round of peace talks between the rival factions would begin this week.
