Libya has named a US beauty contest participant its honorary consul to Washington at a ceremony in Tripoli, just days after President George W. Bush extended economic sanctions against Tripoli.
Tecca Zendik, who attended an international beauty contest in Tripoli back in October, was also granted Libyan nationality at a ceremony held in the Al-Mahari hotel earlier this week.
"Zendik's appointment by the Libyan government does not mean there are any diplomatic relations between the two countries," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassuna Shawush told AFP on Tuesday.
Shawush added that Zendik, who lives in the United States, would not have an office there, and that her position was simply "honorary". (Albawaba.com)
