Macedonian forces fired sporadically throughout the night and into the early morning Friday at Albanian rebel positions in the hills surrounding the northwestern town of Tetovo.
Bursts of heavy machinegun and small-arms fire punctuated the night here, where Macedonian forces resumed firing on the rebels Thursday after the guerrillas ignored a government ultimatum to lay down their arms.
Despite warnings from the government that its forces would launch an "uncompromising" crackdown on the rebels, the army has yet to launch a wide-ranging assault on about a dozen villages held by the guerillas along the border with Kosovo since mid-March -- TETOVO, Macedonia (AFP)
