ALBAWABA - French media reportedly said that Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina has fled the country amid violent protests which erupted weeks ago against him and his government.

In a speech broadcast on social media Monday evening, Madagascar's President revealed that he was forced to move to a safe location for his own safety.

Radio France Internationale (RFI) reported that the president was flown from the Indian Ocean island nation on a French military plane on Sunday, under an agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron.

It is worth mentioning that Andry Rajoelina gained the French nationality in 2014; however, he didn't say where he was moved.

The leader of the opposition in parliament added that the President's decree to dissolve the national assembly is "not legally valid", Reuters reported.

"This decree is not legally valid... the president of the national assembly says he was not consulted," Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko was quoted.

Gen Z protests in Madagascar:

Protests in Madagascar involved tens of thousands of young people, due to power and water outages, the deterioration of the education system, high unemployment, and widespread poverty.

However, the protests, which were at first peaceful, turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people.
