Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Tuesday pledged to help Lebanon maintain calm and stability in the country's Palestinian camps.

The comment came during a meeting with Lebanon's Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk in Jordan's capital Amman where Abbas resides.

Abbas stressed his "readiness to exert all possible efforts in order to maintain the stability of the camps and to ensure the best relations with the Lebanese government," Machnouk wrote on Twitter.

He added that the two discussed regional developments without elaborating.

Lebanon hosts about 500,000 Palestinian refugees residing mostly in 12 official camps across the country.

The camps, which are off limits to Lebanese security forces, are among the poorest and most volatile areas of the country.
