Mahmoud Abbas to visit Cairo for talks

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to visit Cairo this weekend to meet Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the ambassador of Palestine to Cairo said Wednesday.

Jamal al-Shubaki said in a statement that Abbas would meet Sisi on Sunday to “consult him on the ongoing situation in Palestine.”

The ambassador added that the meeting would focus on efforts to push forward the Middle East peace process in light of the ongoing Israeli “aggression” against the Palestinian people.

Al-Shubaki said that the Palestinian president would also meet with other Egyptian officials before leaving to Saudi Arabia in order to attend a joint summit of Arab and South American countries.

The Palestinian president has called several times over the past weeks for international intervention in the occupied Palestinian territory, where at least 72 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces since Oct. 1.

International leaders have proposed kickstarting peace negotiations between Palestinian leadership and Israel again amid the escalation, and the Middle East Quartet is expected to visit the area in the coming weeks.
