In an effort to support the local community of Al Salam City, where Makro will be opening their first store, later this year, a two-day employment fair was hosted solely for the residents of the area. Organized in collaboration with Salam City’s Vice Governor and the district’s Municipality Head, over 1,000 people attended, for the chance to work at Makro.
Discussing the success of the employment fair, the General Manager of Makro Egypt, Francois Oliver said “It has been part of our business ethic to work with the local community in every market that we enter. When we decided to invest in Salam City, we wanted to do this from start to finish, and this means including residents in the process every step of the way.”
Khaled Hussein, Store Manager of the Makro Salam City Branch, was highly enthused regarding the employment fair and stated “At Makro we are extremely keen on immersing ourselves within the local community. At the end of the day, Makro will be a store for local professionals and should be run by local professionals.”
From over 1,000 residents interviewed, 300 were shortlisted and will be invited back for a second interview. In total more than 200 residents from Salam City will be employed. Each store opened will offer a total of 250 direct job opportunities.
Commenting on the employment fair, Eng. Mokhtar El Hamalawy, Vice Governor of Al Salam City, stated “We always welcome and encourage any company interested in developing our community whether through quality services or job employment. Makro’s employment fair was a joint effort that we embarked on in order to develop the community and to provide jobs to local residents, making it easier for them to pursue a better quality of life without the hassle of commuting.”
General Samy Marei, the district’s Municipality Head, stated “Our district is full of great talent and I am proud to support any initiative that seeks out this talent. Based on the directions of H.E. the Governor of Cairo, Dr. Ali Abd El Azeem Wazeer, we coordinated closely with Makro to ensure that the employment fair went over smoothly and we are happy to report that it did.”
Projected to open later this year, Al Salam City will be home to Makro’s first store, in Egypt working exclusively with professionals to provide a product mix of 18,000 food and non-food whole sale products. In the medium term, Makro plans to open 12 stores, with an eventual long term plan to open 23 stores which will be situated in all the major cities in Egypt.
