A Malaysian policeman who shot and wounded a doctor who later died of head injuries has been sentenced to eight years in jail, the official Bernama news agency said Monday.
Policeman Tony Beliang, 26, was found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of 29-year-old doctor Tai Eng Teck on September 20 last year.
Beliang fired two shots at the doctor who was in his car in a parking lot near a train station in Cheras, south of the capital.
He argued that Tai had tried to run him down and that he fired in self-defense, but the judge disagreed.
A fellow policeman, Abdul Muin Idris, testified for the prosecution that Tai had swerved left to avoid knocking them down.
Beliang has appealed the sentence to the High Court and freed on 15,000 ringgit (3,947 dollars) bail.
The victim's father, Tai See Beng, last November filed a lawsuit against the police and the government over his son's death -- KUALA LUMPUR (AFP)
