ALBAWABA - Taking part in a protest marking the 1st anniversary of the brutal Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, a CBS journalist set himself ablaze in a plaza near the White House in Washington D.C.
According to the Washington Post, the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. local time. The incident happened after thousands took to the streets to protest in honor of the first anniversary of the Israeli aggression on Gaza on October 7.
According to the Washington Post, bystanders screamed and called for a medic, and the guy was swiftly extinguished. Two DC police officers ran to the victim, one snatching his shirt and the other grabbing a keffiyeh lying on the ground and attempting to put out the flames with it.
Emergency personnel immediately removed the man and de-escalated the situation by closing the area to additional demonstrators. authorities told people to back away from the area, while protest organizers spoke via a microphone, urging people away from authorities.
According to D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith's statement to the Post, the man was brought to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
This was not the first time someone committed self-immolation in protest of Israel's bombardment of Gaza. In February of this year, an active-duty US Airman died after lighting himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC.
Bushnell approached the Israeli embassy at noon on February 25 and began live-streaming on Twitch, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Law enforcement officers suspect he laid his phone down before dousing himself with accelerant and starting the fire. He once stated that he "will no longer be complicit in genocide," according to Bushnell.
Al-Aqsa Flood operation against Israel
Hamas military group announced on Oct. 7 a military operation called "Al-Aqsa Flood" against Israel which is the biggest offensive in decades.
Palestinian fighters “infiltrated” Israel from the Gaza Strip and captured military bases and took hostages as photos and videos went viral online showing Hamas fighters on vehicles inside Israel and others paragliding into occupation territory.
In response, Israeli armed forces announced targeting Hamas positions inside the Gaza Strip. Thousands were killed, and dozens of thousands of others were injured in the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
