A large explosion on Monday hit the Somali capital Mogadishu near the city's airport, Al Jazeera reported.

Witnesses at the scene told Reuters that the blast was followed by heavy gunfire.

CCTV News Africa correspondent Abdulaziz Billow Ali reported that the blast targeted a police checkpoint, while a second blast hit near the Peace Hotel and a heavily fortified compound.

It is not yet clear whether there were any casualities or injuries as a result.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the militant group Al-Shabaab is active in the country and regularly carries out suicide bombings.
