Mauritanian President Announces Political Reforms

Mauritanian President Maouya Ould Taya has announced a reform of the laws regulating the election of deputies and senators allowing "greater participation" by everyone on the political scene.

Addressing the nation to mark Tuesday's 40th independence anniversary, he said he wanted to introduce "a dose of proportional representation that will permit greater participation by the different political actors."

The reforms also include a study to determine the best means to finance political parties and to bring about greater media coverage of their activities, Taya said.

The moves were seen as a gesture to the opposition which has been boycotting elections, claiming massive fraud and calling for greater electoral transparency – NOUAKCHOTT (AFP)
