Mayor of Amman, Engineer Omar Maani, inspected, on Monday, the rehabilitation works at the old souks of Al-Bukhariya, Al-Balabsa, and Philadelphia which were caught on fire earlier this month. The rehabilitation commenced at the three souks by the Greater Amman Municipality on August 18, aiming at regaining their traditional ambience during the holy month of Ramadan. Maani was accompanied in his downtown tour with City Center Manager, Tahseen Al-Abbadi.
During his tour, Maani listened to remarks raised by a number of the merchants at the area, and exchanged with them views about the restitution process. He stressed on GAM's commitment to complete the rehabilitation works as set on schedule. He said that the Municipality will not reserve any effort to help merchants resume their trading and businesses at the three souks very soon.
Maani called on the merchants to bear and cooperate with GAM and the concerned institutions to help completing the rehabilitation works on time. The Mayor was briefed by the contractor of the rehabilitation project on the latest renovations of the three souks.
The merchants, on their part, praised GAM's swift reaction to the situation, as well as its commitment to complete the renovations promptly.
It is worth mentioning that GAM's renovations of the three souks are divided into three phases. The Municipality is currently finishing the first phase which includes the rehabilitation works and cleaning of rubbles caused by the blaze. The Municipality will renovate the souks according to the latest engineering standards that ensure the public safety in the area.
Al-Abbadi said that the rehabilitation works are jointly supervised by the concerned engineering departments at the Municipality, the Public Security Committee which was formed by the Amman Governor, and the Royal Scientific Society engineers. These works, he said, are carried out around the clock, to promptly meet the set deadline.
The Municipality has recently formed a committee representing the merchants in the three souks to coordinate efforts with the City Center Manager, and to maintain proper communication with the Municipality on the latest developments in the rehabilitation process.
