Several members of Daesh's religious police force have allegedly been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the city of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, according to AFP.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said "unidentified gunmen ambushed members of [Daesh's] Hesbah force in the town of Mayadeen" while on patrol.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman stated it was unclear how many members had been kidnapped.

The incident came a day after the deputy leader of the religious police force, an Egyptian, was found beheaded in Mayadeen, also in eastern Syria, the Observatory said.

The AFP reports that the body was "found decapitated, with his body showing signs of torture and a cigarette in his mouth with a sign reading 'This is evil, Sheikh.'"

There is a ban on smoking in Daesh's "Islamic State", which is enforced by confiscating tobacco products and punishing those caught smoking.
