ALBAWABA- Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. border to combat drug smuggling.
In response, U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to pause tariffs on Mexico for one month.
Trump described his conversation with Mexican President López Obrador as "very friendly," confirming that both leaders agreed to a one-month tariff freeze.
He added that during this period, negotiations will take place between three U.S. cabinet ministers and senior Mexican officials to address key trade and security concerns.
During their recent conversation, López Obrador proposed the tariff freeze while discussing broader security and trade issues with Trump.
As part of their agreement, the U.S. has also committed to preventing the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico.
Both nations have already begun joint efforts on security and economic cooperation, marking a significant shift in U.S.-Mexico relations under Trump’s presidency.
The move comes amid broader tariff escalations by the U.S. against Mexico, Canada, and China, reflecting Trump’s campaign pledge to tighten border controls and curb illegal migration.
